Eatontown, NJ – May 2010 Nineteen participants graduated from the Good Neighbor Community Leadership Initiative, a pilot program developed by the Affordable Housing Alliance that familiarizes individuals who are eligible to purchase affordable new homes in Asbury Park with how their community works and how to become a responsible home owner. “As a result of this program, these families have been inspired to become agents of positive change within their community,” said Donna M. Blaze, CEO of the Affordable Housing Alliance, a non-profit organization which develops affordable housing and offers affordable new home sales, foreclosure mediation, rental housing assistance and utility programs and services in Monmouth County. (www.housingall.org). The participants, led by instructors from the fields of banking and real estate law, City of Asbury Park elected officials and administrators, motivational speakers, and representatives from educational, recreational and law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch volunteers and others explored new home buyer education, the governmental process, community responsibility and involvement, educational and recreational resources, and ways to improve safety and quality of life for all at a neighborhood level. This Affordable Housing Alliance program is part of a neighborhood stabilization project created in collaboration with the City of Asbury Park NJ, the Affordable Housing Alliance, Coastal Habitat for Humanity and Interfaith Neighbors. Together, these agencies received a $2.5 million Neighborhood Stabilization grant from State of NJ DCA to lead redevelopment of Asbury Park’s west side. The program will be used to develop housing and make improvements along Springwood Avenue and elsewhere in the city`s southwest quadrant. Michellene Davis, Esq. was the program’s keynote speaker. Ms. Davis, most recently Chief Policy Counsel to Governor Jon Corzine, is currently Senior Vice President for Policy Development and Government Affairs for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. Growing up in Camden, Ms. Davis experienced firsthand "the struggle and stigma associated with being from one of the country`s poorest and most dangerous cities." After receiving a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall University School of Law, Davis served as an assistant deputy public defender for five years before becoming senior policy adviser in the Department of Health and Senior Services. She subsequently became the youngest director of a state Lottery and New Jersey`s first African-American woman state treasurer.
